Dr. Surendar Dwarakanathan is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in advanced cataract, cornea, and keratorefractive surgery. “Dr. D”, as he is referred to by all staff and patients, completed his residency at Cook County Hospital where he went on to serve as chief resident. He subsequently trained at University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas in corneal and anterior segment disease and surgery, focusing on all aspects of “no-blade” refractive surgery and corneal transplantation, including the revolutionary DSEK procedure. He also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated corneal infections and ocular surface disease. Dr. D has been actively involved in clinical research and teaching throughout his career. He has kept up with the academic world as assistant professor at Rush Medical College, Indiana University, and teaches at Cook County Hospital. He is an active educator as he lectures to residents on a weekly basis and is involved in various city-wide teaching programs. He has trained over 30 successful board certified ophthalmologists the last 10 years and has also traveled to India to aid in eye care for the underserved and plans on enlarging this scope to other regions of the world.

Dr. D was in private practice in the south suburbs of Chicago for 9 years, and performed thousands of cataract, cornea, and keratorefractive surgeries in his career before going on to co-found Helix Eye Care. He is always looking to add innovative techniques to his patient-centered approach and is known for his bedside manner. Dr. D believes vision is critical to the quality of his patients’ lives and he always goes the extra mile to provide excellent care.
